Minnesota State University, Mankato’s Department of Music will host a performance titled “Wrapped in Lyrics: Music of Women Composers” Saturday, March 24 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 25 at 3 p.m. in Halling Recital Hall of the Earley Center for the Performing Arts. The performance features Minnesota State Mankato Department of Music vocal instructor Stephanie Thorpe, soprano. The recital performance, in honor of Women’s History Month, is a culmination of Thorpe’s extensive research of contemporary classical women composers and contemporary commercial composers. This unique combination of women composers has often been researched and performed, but rarely together and by the same performer. Through the words and music of female composers, this recital is an adventure in storytelling and highlights a variety of styles and genres. The majority of the composers chosen for this recital are advocates for the arts, activists for a variety of causes, and are unique artists in their own right. The first section of the recital is contemporary, featuring repertoire by Georgia Stitt, Joni Mitchell, Brandi Carlile, and Sara Bareilles, with lyrics found in everyday situations or miniature life adventures.
