My favorite way to transition to the new year has been to attend the New Year’s Eve Concert for Peace in the grand, awe-inspiring space of the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine. The music that fills its cavernous space with such pure, sweet sound, inspires contemplation, hope, and even calm against the uncertainty ahead…. The concert also featured the world premiere of a stunning choral piece, “Come, Lord, And Tarry Not,” from a new oratorio by composer Georgia Stitt, who played the piano and soprano Jamet Pittman and Randy Landau on bass. “All right ladies, here we go! One, two, three, four!” calls music director Georgia Stitt to her five-woman band at curtain up for each performance of the New Group’s Sweet Charity, starring Tony winner Sutton Foster. For patrons who somehow missed the orchestra as they march — glamorously costumed — to their perch above the stage, it’s one final pre-performance “hey, check us out” declaration. I’m so excited to be working with Grant Gershon and the LA Master Chorale in preparation for this event on March 19th, 2016. If you’re in a position to spend the big bucks to support one of my favorite music-making organizations in the country, you can come hear the world premiere of a choral setting of “These Two,” as well as performances of “The Promise of Light” and a setting of “Do Not Stand At My Grave And Weep.” Jason Robert Brown and I are co-chairing the gala, and yes, that means we’ll be in LA for a few days, celebrating choral singers and wearing very fancy clothes.

Tomorrow night, Wednesday, April 8th, I’ll be participating in an evening of choral music written by my fellow composers in the Broadway community. Conductor Judith Clurman has long been a champion of crossing these genres and I am happy to be one of the composers she enlisted to write for Essential Voices, her fantastic ensemble of singers.
