EIGHTEEN YEARS AGO A BOY STOOD HERE
WITH HIS TWO BEST FRIENDS,
ON THIS VERY SPOT WHERE THE RIVER BENDS.
AFTERNOONS WERE SUNNY AND DRY,
NOT A CARE OR CLOUD IN THE SKY.
IT WAS ME AND WILL AND RYAN
AND THE WATER.
I REMEMBER IT LIKE YESTERDAY
FEEL THE BREEZE ON MY SKIN.
“TAKE MY HAND, CLOSE YOUR EYES, AND JUMP RIGHT IN,”
TEARING THROUGH THE OLD NEIGHBORHOOD,
MAKING WAVES HOWEVER WE COULD.
IT WAS ME AND WILL AND RYAN
AND THE WATER,
AND IT WAS GOOD.
RYAN LED.
RYAN SAID,
“THERE’S ALWAYS NEW WATER TO EXPLORE
IT RACES, IT FLOWS.
IT GOES BECAUSE IT KNOWS
IF IT STOPS MOVING, IT’S NOT A RIVER ANYMORE.”
THAT’S WHAT RYAN WOULD SAY
RIGHT UP TO THE DAY
THE WATER TOOK RYAN AWAY.
I BROUGHT THE BEER.
I DROVE THE BOAT.
GOD HELP ME, I WAS THE ONE.
I SAID THE STORM WOULD BE FUN.
RYAN’S GONE.
JUST MOVE ON.
THERE’S ALWAYS NEW WATER TO EXPLORE.
IT RACES RIGHT BY
AND I AM STAYING DRY.
BECAUSE I DIDN’T DIE.
WHY DIDN’T I DIE?
EIGHTEEN YEARS A BOY DIED HERE
WITH HIS TWO BEST FRIENDS
ON A DARK AND STORMY DAY THAT NEVER ENDS.
I CANNOT CONTROL WHAT WILL DOES.
I AM NOT THAT KID THAT I WAS,
YET SOMEHOW IT’S STILL ME AND WILL AND RYAN
AND THE WATER.
IT’S ALWAYS ME AND WILL AND RYAN
AND THE WATER.
