EIGHTEEN YEARS AGO A BOY STOOD HERE
WITH HIS TWO BEST FRIENDS,
IN THIS VERY SPOT WHERE THE RIVER BENDS.
AFTERNOONS WERE SUNNY AND DRY,
NOT A CARE OR A CLOUD IN THE SKY.
IT WAS ME AND WILL AND RYAN
AND THE WATER.

I REMEMBER IT LIKE YESTERDAY
FEEL THE SUN ON MY SKIN
“TAKE MY HAND, CLOSE YOUR EYES AND JUMP RIGHT IN,”
RYAN SHOUTED RIGHT WHERE HE STOOD.
LIKE THE FOOLS WE WERE WE BOTH WOULD.
IT WAS ME AND WILL AND RYAN
AND THE WATER,
AND IT WAS GOOD.

RYAN LED.
RYAN SAID,
“THERE’S ALWAYS NEW WATER TO EXPLORE
IT RACES, IT FLOWS.
IT GOES AND GOES AND GOES
BECAUSE THE WATER KNOWS
IF IT STOPS MOVING, IT’S NOT A RIVER ANYMORE.”
THAT’S WHAT RYAN WOULD SAY
RIGHT UP TO THE DAY
THE WATER TOOK RYAN AWAY.

I BROUGHT THE BEER.
I DROVE THE BOAT.
GOD HELP ME, I WAS THE ONE.
I SAID THE STORM WOULD BE FUN.
IT WAS ME.
NOT WILL.
NOT RYAN.
NOT THE WATER

EIGHTEEN YEARS AGO A BOY DIED HERE
WITH HIS TWO BEST FRIENDS
ON A DARK AND STORMY DAY THAT NEVER ENDS
MY WHOLE LIFE WAS DROWNED ON THAT DAY.
I GOT DRUNK AND WILL MOVED AWAY.
IT WAS ME […] AND NOTHING
BUT THE WATER.

RYAN DIED
AND I TRIED.
THERE’S ALWAYS NEW WATER TO EXPLORE.
IT RACES RIGHT BY
AND I AM STAYING DRY.
BECAUSE I DIDN’T DIE
IF IT STOPS MOVING, IT’S NOT A RIVER ANYMORE.

EIGHTEEN YEARS HAVE PASSED SINCE WE STOOD HERE
AS THE BEST OF FRIENDS.
IN THIS SPOT ON WHICH SO VERY MUCH DEPENDS.
I CANNOT CONTROL WHAT WILL DOES
I AM NOT THAT KID THAT I WAS
YET SOMEHOW IT’S STILL ME AND WILL AND RYAN
AND THE WATER.
IT’S ALWAYS ME AND WILL AND RYAN
AND THE WATER.
